Carnaval de Barranquilla

I went to this year’s Carnaval in Barranquilla which took place from from February 18th until the 21st, here’s the low down on my experience there: I wasn’t too sure if I was going to go or not, so it was a bit of a last minute decision to go there and as usual, I didn’t have any concrete plans or logistics set up. I PM’d Hencredible Casanova to ask about the city since he’s been there before, after he recommended it to me (thanks again HC) I booked my flight and arrived there two days before and checked into a decent hotel (King George Suites on Calle 94 51B-88) 80K/night. I was there alone but met up that night with two other RooshV forum members, rasta87 and 20nation, best thing I could have done because us three guys ended up partying together the entire time, hopefully they’ll chime in on this data sheet too. LOGISTICS : Getting to BAQ was no problem, I flew Avianca from Cali and it cost 250K ($140USD), the taxi from the airport (in the far south) to my hotel (far north) was 25K. One thing about taxis in BAQ, they don’t use meters like they do in Bogota and from our experience, they WILL try to rip a foreigner off. Hotels, if you don’t prebook, try to get there a couple of days early to find one, they do fill up and prices go way up. I had to leave my hotel in the north after two days because they were full, luckily I found one in the city centre, Hotel Marseille (Calle 44 Carrera 43), it was basic (no WI-Fi but had AC and hot water) and cheap at 30K/night, except for Saturday and Sunday when in cost me $110K. This wasn’t an ideal area to stay (shitty part of town, run down and a bit dodgy at night), I looked at another one in the north (a block from Buenavista mall), it seemed nice so I went in to ask the, a single room cost 1.7 million pesos ($950 USD) per night! The Carnaval : I’ve never been to a big carnaval party like this where most of the city is shut down for 5 days straight and everyone is partying and in a festive spirit, so I have nothing to compare it to. All I can say is that BAQ was live the whole time, there were plenty of party options. There were big events and concerts in the stadium on calle 76, including fiesta de Cerveza, Marc Anthony concert, crowning of the Carnaval Queen etc. We didn’t end up going in because the lines were so long, the one time we did try to get tickets, it was a gong show, people were all pushing and shoving and the cops were busting pick pockets all over the place, we waited for about a half an hour before deciding to say screw it, we’ll party somewhere else. If you want to see a show in the stadium, I’d recommend getting there early, but once you’re inside, you can’t leave and some of the tickets are for sitting only. Outside of the big events inside the stadium, there were plenty of other party options. We went to parades 3 days in a row, they were spectacular, the floats were amazing and of course, plenty of hot women in the parades from all over Colombia. Basically we’d post up in a spot along the parade route and drink copious amounts of beer and aguardiente and spray ourselves and random people with the canisters of foam the were selling. We’d do this from around noon til about 4 or 5pm then go back to the hotel to wash up and rest a bit before heading out in the night. We didn’t hit up any of the big night clubs (we almost went into one but the cover was 50K, a bit much), I don’t even know if BAQ has any big clubs, but we found this cool area of bars and small food shops on calle 84 in the north. The club we partied at is called “Barcelona Shots”, it has tables inside and out and a small dance floor, it was packed the two nights we went there, there’s also 4 other bars beside it, one is called “The Hang Over”, the other one only sold Aguila beer (the bar was painted all yellow and blue, just like the beer) that place had karaoke and was packed too. Another awesome venue we hit up was this Club Colombia outdoor beer tent, when we arrived, we were surprised to find that the cover charge was 12K (for a beer tent?) but then we found out that the price included a bucket of 6 beers each! There was a band playing and probably about 300-400 people there, it was right across the street from the stadium. Then there were lots of random street parties, we ended up meeting up with some local girls (more on them later) who took us around to a bunch of different events, live music and just people hanging out in the streets. I don’t remember the exact locations but basically during Carnaval, you can’t walk 2 blocks in any direction without bumping into some sort of party, big or small. There’s also tonnes of people walking around with coolers selling Aguilas for 2k and lots of street meat being sold too. We also saw a few of the chiva party buses rolling around BAQ too, all packed with crazy partiers, one of them sprayed me in the face with foam while hanging out the window, into the open window of my taxi! So basically for 4 days straight, that’s how it went, sleep til about 9 or 10am, get up and grab some breakfast, hang out for a bit then hit up some carnaval event and drink our faces off all afternoon, chill a bit in the early evening then go out and continue the heavy boozing at various, somewhat random places around the stadium and in the north. There were quite a few foreign tourists at some of the places we partied at (Club Colombia beer tent) then at others, it seemed like we were the only foreigners there. There were lots of party options and I”m sure if we planned things better, we could have gone to even bigger and better parties, but overall I think our Roosh team did well and we all had a fun time. We hung out with local girls every night who showed us around, one I pipelined off the internet before I arrived, one I approached at Barcelona Shots (who came out the next night with her cute 19 year old sister) and one who hit on Rasta87 at a clothing store she worked at (I ended up hooking up with her friend who came out to the parade with us). More about BAQ and the girls: This is one thing that Rasta87 and I definitely DON”T agree on, I personally think BAQ is an ugly, hot, flat, run-down industrial dump with a couple of decent neighbourhoods, I wouldn’t want to live there and I’d only go there for the carnaval. I also think that the Costenas I saw there were the least attractive that I’ve seen so far in all of my travels in Colombia, not very diverse in their looks (morena colour), not very pretty in the face and the asses have nothing on what I saw in Cali. Sure they are nice and definitely approachable, but I find almost all girls in Colombia to be nice and approachable. Also, with my mediocre Spanish skills (they’ve actually come along quite a bit in the past two months), I had a very HARD time understanding the local, they speak fast and with a difficult accent, Rasta87, with his impeccable Spanish skills (seriously, people mistake him for native Spanish speaker sometimes) had no problems with the local lingo. Different strokes for different folks I guess, because Rasta87 LOVES BAQ!!! He’s in Bogota now and so am I, we hung out all day yesterday and were walking around Chapinero and hanging out in Candelaria, I’d see a fly Rola girl and say “come on man, look at that chick, you can’t say she ain’t hot bud” and of course his reply “fuck that mate, she’s got that ugly Bogota nose man, I can’t stand that, I’ll take a dark little Costena over one of those anyday”. This guy loves BAQ so much, once he’s done his business in Bogota (only reason he’s here I think, he doesn’t like Bogota, I love it!), I’m pretty sure he’s going back to BAQ! Anyway, thats about it guys, Carnaval 2012 was a blast, met some cool guys from the forum (that’s 4 guys now so far, all awesome) and did some serious partying. I’m not too sure how well it stacks up against others like Rio, or if I’d travel from far away just to go to it, but for sure if you’re close to BAQ next year during Carnaval time, come check it out! QUIEN LO VIVE ES QUIEN LO GOZA!!!!

DATA SHEET: Updated San Francisco - After Hours and more…

I can’t believe there is an online forum that’s international, haven’t posted anything in my life so to say I am excited is an understatement. But need to earn some rep points first before I ask questions. Here goes: Cutting to the chase here is the order of the post: 1. How to break into after hours scene 2. Best one night stand spot 3. Swag/style advice 4. Day Game After hours: Someone asked how u get into this scene, well here u go.. 1. Easiest way: in a word drugs, specifically xtac. Not saying u have to drop but that’s your quickest entrance is to buy a few pills. The cops are paid off for the real shiz out here so people sell xtac out of backpacks in the best spots. If you think the old “insomnia” was the best AH spot you are tripping, anything on “yelp” will get shut down in 2 seconds. So for easy entrance into the scene try to buy a pill or 2 at “the end up”. Open past 2am and they make a killing serving bottled water.. Go here 3-5 times and u can ask about “other AH spots”. Try to buy from someone in the 30ish age range. 2. Second option is befriending bartenders in the soma/union square area. This is more vague because it’s hard to tell whose in the scene. But a good filter is a bar/lounge with $5 cover on a friday/Saturday. Also a g-star raw jacket tends to be a giveaway. Finally if u have mad convincing game, there are 2 Asian restaurants where the cooks are in the scene on broadway. Not throwing them under the bus with names but it’s flat out on broadway not a side street. 3. The hardest way… Find a girl in the scene (raves), she’s most likely going to be at raver events or at dj events such as Benni bennassi. Warning: these parties are hit or miss. I have met NBA players and also run into full on crack heads. Definitely a sick experience, recommended for 20 yrolds to try out. One Night Stand How has no one said DNA Lounge? Seriously. Routine: open set before band goes on stage or whatever shitty performance. After 5 mins I use “have u been here before” as a filter, “yes?” = can close out. “No” good luck only waste ur time if she live in SF. Assuming failed pick up, when band goes on stage go up stairs immediately. Do not open during the concert 30 min performance thing. When up stairs walk to bar on opposite end of performance glance down and the single girls will be frustrated. Now u have 5ish women for sure u can approach. Talk up someone or chill and go bal for round 2. Here it is regular game. If u didn’t fail, go upstairs with said girl, sit on a couch before people crowd up the place, run a few threads and you’re gravy. Talent here is hit or miss, only go saturday. Marina: Triangle bars, enough said eastside west, matrix, and cougar bar across the street. Much more looks base here, if you’re very good looking grab an apartment right there and get a rotation going, won’t even need to go to other areas in town. Unless u are against white girls. North beach: Best bet is oreiley’s and Maggie mc Garry’s. Need to have good SF vibe. Dress even more down than the mentioned DNA lounge, makes no sense because DNA is more hipster ish. Anyway absolute must to go to oreileys on st pattys day, I believe a homeless man could make out at minimum on that day (only 2 weeks!) Style: Cutting to chase: Marina = dress well, more gq status no polo shirt crap unless u are mega yoked and good looking DNA/Mission: Semi clean cut, jeans maybe a couple tears in them, long sleeve clean dress shirt. NO JACKETS that will make u another uninteresting hipster, no suits either. Suits only work on NYE type events. North beach: polo shirt look, serious bar scene here similar to Polk street. Honestly my bar game needs improvement so I may be wrong but got best results with casual look Day game: Union square: I don’t smoke, but for day game I suddenly do! Find girls alone ask for a light, game on. Delores Park: I use regular day game here, fake tourist lines, where is the “golden gate” (still can’t believe that shit worked I have lived here for 6+ years!). Dance classes: I call this day game, because if u take lessons you have to game sober that’s what I consider day game, no alcohol. Usual line here is “I’m taking xyz class to go to X country” thread into travel talk. Anyway, fuck me if there are typos doing this from my phone but hope this helps as a first post. Good luck!

Ireland Datasheet

Think of Ireland and you probably have 100’s of clichés in your head. From green shamrocks to leprechauns and old men sipping pints of Guinness -there is a lot to get past before you scramble ashore on the real Ireland. So is it worth going to? Yes Will you have fun? Yes Will you get some hot girls? Maybe… Beyond chasing the ladies it is still well worth a look, for Ireland is one of Europe’s gems, a scenic extravaganza of lake, mountain, sea and sky that’s still gorgeous enough to make your jaw. From the lonely, wind-lashed wilderness of Donegal to the picture-postcard harbour villages of County Cork, there are countless opportunities to get outdoors and explore, whether it’s surfing some of the best beaches in Europe or hiking the hills of Kerry and Connemara. All the major cities such as Dublin, Cork and Galway have top-notch restaurants, party-on pubs and a foot-stomping live-music scene, while you can track down impromptu pub sessions of traditional Irish music in places like Lahinch, Doolin and Killarney. So let’s get into how to make the most of it: Right straight up I’d say the best way to approach Ireland is to go with a good attitude and not solely for the purpose of banging the locals. I say this from knowing International friends who have visited and have had very mixed results with the ladies. I would rate it as an intermediate-advanced game location. That being said if you have good game and know the right places to go there is no reason why your trip would not be epic. Most people who have been to Ireland once always come back again and again. Night Clubs vs. Bars I would stay clear of nightclubs unless you have already laid the ground work with someone and it’s more of a location bounce. Ireland’s nightclub are the hardest place to pull due to the high level of bitch shields, the too drunk girls and way to loud music. You wouldn’t be able to run any game plus dance floor game doesn’t work too well here. I think the best idea would be to do explore during the day and then start hitting the pubs around 8pm. I am not go into what exact bars to visit in Ireland because there is literally thousands but instead what way to plan your night. Pick a bar of a busy street or close to the centre of given town/city. Look for a bar with decent music, large bar and good smoking area. The layout of the pub is crucial. Look for bars with good circulation as you will be hoping to meet the most amounts of people possible. Like nowhere else I have ever been being able to meet the highest amount of people in a night out greatly increases your chances of pulling. It is a number game here but there is many ways to increase your odds. Dress Sharp Good clean style with a European look. The only place wearing a suit will work for your advantage is in high end bars in the major cities. Everywhere else aim for a slightly alternative but still fancy look. Something like this… Dressing too well, as in suits or super expensive clothes, will only hurt your chances. Irish girls prefer smart casual dressed guys and will be suspicious of you if you look too rich. Not sure why but people kinda freak out a little if you are dressed too well. Stay sharp and stay sober(ish) Everyone gets drunk in Ireland but on the nights you want to pull show some restraint. Most Irish lads don’t have good game because they get hammered and then try and make some drunken move while they can hardly stand. I have literally seen guys try to pick-up while getting sick next to the girl. Don’t be these guys. At the same time people get suspicious of people who don’t drink so try and find a nice balance. Stay on the pints and avoid doing shots. Having good game helps because it’s all about being able to get a good conversation going, being funny and constantly having logistics in the back of your head. Again the best places to start these are at the bar and in the smoking area. Avoid sitting down at a table in any pub. Always try and keep yourself beside a high foot- traffic area. It’s all about being seen and being social. Attitude Be friendly to everyone. Everyone. That includes the old women at the bar and the old guy by himself in the corner. You will be judged a lot by how you handle yourself with everyone in the bar. A great trick in Ireland is to open the easiest person possible but someone that is within view and hearing distance of a different group that you actually want to talk to. Trust me they will be listening and then you can easily switch over to them. Game style Don’t try any crazy palm reading stuff or some routine. You will get openly laughed at. Instead good story telling, humour and being social. Again it is all about being interesting, well presented and always having logistics in mind. Try and read the situation well as Irish girls can be total sluts if given the chance but at other times you will be unable to get anywhere because of the social setting. All the guys that I have known to have done well here all had a similar style of game. They could all be the party, knew how to drink but stay sharp and could read the situation well. Most of the time in Ireland misreading the situation is what will kill it for you. Or complete random bullshit. For example I was getting on great with this really cute girl for about 30 minutes when her friend runs over out of nowhere, throws the girl I am talking to over her shoulder and shouts ‘he’s a redhead’ and runs out of the club with her at full speed. Gone. I could only laugh but it shows the drunken randomness that goes into every night out over here. I actually just turned with a big smile on my face and opened another girl beside me about how crazy girls are. She loved it. That is what it is all about here- go with the fun and have a great attitude no matter what. If you are the kind of person who laughs when things go ridiculously bad you will get on well here. I am doing this post in parts so when I get time I will edit this next and put in all all the different towns/cities/tourist spots that are great to visit. Hope this helps people since it’s the first one of these I have ever done. Thanks for reading.

Pueblos de Antioquia

Overview This thread is in response to some forum members wanting to know a bit more about pueblos in and around Medellin (department of Antioquia). I’ve been to tons of these places, both through work and through pleasure. In the last six months alone I’ve been to Guatape, Santa Fe de Antioquia, Rio Negro, El Carmen de Viboral, Amaga, El Retiro, Ciudad Bolivar, Jardin, Puerto Triunfo, Barbosa, and Puerto Berrio. Now this should go without saying, but the reason someone goes to one of these pueblos is vastly different than the reason he would go to a big city (Cali, Medellin, Bogota) or even a second-tier spot (Pereira, Manizales, etc). Basically, you go there to get away from the hustle for a bit, to slow things down and tap into a different side of Colombia. You shouldn’t head there with the expectation to swoop beautiful women. This is going to by nature appeal more to the long-term traveler or resident than someone swinging in for a week, so keep your own priorities in mind. I’m not going to break down all these towns (you can always PM me), just the two most popular ones followed by my personal favorite. Guatape So Guatape is far-and-away the best know pueblo to visitors to Medellin. It’s only located about 1.5 hours away from the city so it’s ideal for a quick day trip. The main attraction is El Penol/Penon, a gigantic black monolithic rock towering over the town. It’s a mildly arduous climb to the top, but there’s a place to sit and eat up there and the views over the town and lake are absolutely stunning. Coming down, you should swing over to the lake and walk along the promenade. It’s lined with solid little restaurants (Guatape is known for its trout), and there’s also a zip line over the water, although I’ve never bothered waiting in the huge line. Which brings us to the downside to Guatape: it is a secret to exactly know one. Every time I’ve been it’s been swarming with tourists and backpackers, so don’t go in expecting to have a little slice of Colombia all to yourself. I do recommend wandering up through the old town though, as it’s filled with charming little houses and almost no other foreigner will be following you. Bottom line : Even if you’re only in Medellin for a week or so I’d recommend checking out Guatape (paisa girls love showing it off so it shouldn’t be hard to pipeline one and get her come with) and then heading back into Medellin for the night. Santa Fe de Antioquia If Guatape is the most visited pueblo around Medellin, Santa Fe is a fairly distant second. Located about 2 hours outside the city, it used to be the capital of Antioquia. It doesn’t have any Big Attraction like El Penol in Guatape, but what it does have is a famously atmospheric colonial Old Town and several charming little plazas. This is a good place to go to unwind for a couple of days or to bring a new girl. It’s a sensual romantic vibe, and you’ll have the atmosphere working with you (although it can get really fucking hot). One tip: Every year Santa Fe puts on a film festival highlighting one specific country (France, Mexico, and Japan in recent years I believe). This is basically a gigantic open-air street party, as they drag out massive film screens or project movies directly onto the walls while hordes of people wander around getting drunk and having a good time. I highly recommend it both for the uniqueness of the environment (art house cinema outdoors in an 1800s era colonial town) as well as the swarms of hot young things getting hammered around you. I think it is usually in December, although you definitely want to fact check me on that. Jardin Ok, this is the big one. Guatape and Santa Fe are nice, but in my book no other pueblo in Colombia holds a candle to Jardin. I almost hate to mention it, because I’ve never seen another gringo there, but if people don’t contribute their spots then this forum is worthless. Basically, Jardin. Is. Gorgeous. It’s about 3 hours outside Medellin, but if you’ve got the time then it is absolutely worth it. This place is like stepping back in time. It’s a tiny little coffee town surrounded by rolling green mountains, blessed by mild weather and friendly old-school people. Town life revolves around the central plaza, a charming area ringed by small cafes and dominated by a really impressive cathedral. This is the place you come to in order to really unwind, relax, and recharge. Roosh if you were still in Colombia this is where you’d be. I’d say about half of Jardin’s appeal is the atmosphere and beauty of the surroundings, whereas the other half is the day trips. The two big ones are la Cueva de Esplendor and the Dripping Mountain. Both are within about an hour’s ride (on horse) from the town through the mountains, followed by a fairly intense hike. If you just have time for one check out the cave, it’s quite beautiful with a waterfall pouring in from a gap in the stone overhead. I don’t think there are any travel companies in the pueblo itself, but I have a friend who booked a tour from Medellin, or if you have decent Spanish you can just ask around when you get there (it’s one of those places where everyone knows everyone). Finally, there’s a little cable car leaving from town that takes you up to a bar/restaurant in the mountains overhead. It’s best to go up there at night for a few drinks and soak in the view, ideally with some female companionship. Bottom line: Jardin just might be my favorite place in Colombia, and certainly among the most beautiful. If you have the opportunity then go there.

Tips and tricks for broke travelers

I wrote this for my website last year when i was still into hardcore cheap ass traveling. The 3 major cost components: 1 - Accommodation Accommodation is the number one cost of traveling, the more special or remote the city or place you’re staying is, the more you pay. The language barrier is also a problem finding a cheap place. Conning touts or taxi drivers will always take you to the place where they receive the most commission. The Lonely planet is a reasonable guidebook but as soon as those recommended guesthouses are in there, they start charging a lot more. Booking a hostel online is not bad either; most have pictures, prices and route descriptions on there. Costs will average between at least 3 to 12 dollar is poor countries to 12 tot 30 dollars in the more developed countries or special places. Solutions - When staying in place of minor importance (transport hub, or place where there will be no girl chasing) Swallow your pride and stay in the cheapest place possible. Nothing wrong with cold showers and squatter toilets, Man up ! - Try couchsurfing, free places to stay and most people will show you around and treat you as their guest, never turn away from free food and drinks. - Stay in cheap dorms and guesthouses, also a place to pick up chicks. Banging in the dorm rooms is not uncommon but it doesn’t happen as much as people say, just hang some sheets around your bed and keep it quiet. - Find a girl who will accommodate you, spend money on her as long as it cheaper than getting your own place. Of course the girl herself is a bonus too. - Share a double room with somebody, possibly a girl so you can have some nightly action too. It’s a great way to get in her pants, Ask her if she wants to share a room for the costs, work your magic and end up using the other bed to put your bag on. Yes, this works!!! - Bargain for a room, it’s possible with most guesthouses and hotels. No guts, no glory. - Build up a great network of Facebook friends, when in the neighborhood, they can accommodate you for free (and provide food and/or drinks) or find a cheap place to stay for you. - Book a place for the night and start walking and asking around for better and cheaper places, check out next day and relocate 2 – Food and drinks Food and drinks is the second most expensive part of traveling, especially drinking alcohol can certainly ruin your budget. In a lot of countries going out means spending more on drinks than on food and accommodation all together. In some places food will be costly also because there is just no cheap grub around or you sick of eating the same cheap food over and over. For example: rice and noodles. Solutions : Food : - Eat lots of street food, you’re stomach will get used to it eventually; going to more expensive places is no guarantee for not spending a day or two on the toilet. Stop washing your hands every 10 minutes, build up some tolerance. - Get breakfast included in your guesthouse, it will be a shit breakfast, but hey, it’s free right! Personally I can’t stand those toast with jam breakfasts and will eat out. - Cook yourself if you are in more expensive countries, again I almost never cook and will go to a fast food place or street market to get my belly filled. I’m lazy and don’t know how to except for pasta. - Never refuse when people you meet offer you food, its rude and bad for your wallet. - When dating girls is poor countries you will be the one paying for everything (exceptions apply), bite the bullet on this one, you can’t expect them to pay for their one food and drinks when they make 3 dollars a day. Its shows no respect if you ask them to split the bill, you will make a fool of yourself. Don’t go overboard with it either, when a girl eats rice 7 days a week and wants to go to a 5 star restaurant when with you, dump that gold-digger. She has to like you, not your bank account. - Find places with cheap food, Chinese restaurants are a good option. Buffets and places where you get free food are another option. - Take a girl out to Mac Donalds, just say you haven’t had a Big Mac in months and you’re craving for it. If the girl really likes you, she won’t mind. In some countries Mac Donalds is a high end place and girls love to eat there. - Go eat at a cheap local place and say to the girl your with that you love her country and their tasty food, don’t mention you’re eating rice in every possible form for the last year. Look excited when reading the menu. Drinks : - As said before, drinking can kill your budget faster than a speeding bullet. Best solution by far is to stop drinking alcohol. This is also the most boring and unsociable solution. - Drink water instead of coca cola during the day, its much cheaper, healthier and better for your teeth also. Stay away from fresh made juices also, they’re full of sugar and always pricy. And why drink coffee at a Starbucks when Mac Donalds sells it for a quarter of the price. - When going out , drink in if you’re the heavy drinking type, if you want to pick up girls, drink moderate. Nobody likes a slurring ape-man. Stay fresh and focused. - Don’t buy drinks for other (girl)backpackers, In fact never buy drinks for girls before you kissed them. Don’t get fooled by girls trying to get free drinks. Turn it around. - Do not go to expensive clubs with hefty entrance fees and 10 dollar drinks. It’s no guarantee for anything. Clubs like that are frequently used by prostitutes or bitchy gold-digger’s who are not looking for broke backpackers. (This theory is not rock solid. I recently spoke to a guy who went to such places in poor countries, invested in entrance fees and drinks and picked up a rich local girl/woman who paid every for him and spoiled him all the time. I did the same in Indonesia only in a cheap bar. I lived in a great free 5 star hotel and free everything + Cup E boobs and mad sex , actually now that I think about it, I didn’t even buy her a drink. ) - Don’t drink out of boredom in trains, planes and busses. Find somebody to talk to and you might get some free drinks. - Find out when the happy hours are or even get drinks for free in some places. - And last but certainly not the least: Charm girls into buying you drinks. 3 - Transportation : Transportation is the last major reason why your wallet is always empty, the rule is the slower you travel, the cheaper it gets. Unfortunately we cannot teleport ourselves from one place to another so we have to take a bus, train or airplane to get there. You can live as cheap as possible but if a ticket to some destination costs 50 dollar, then you just have to deal with it. Solutions : - Hitchhiking is the cheapest way to get from A to B; I have no experience in it so far, so I suggest you read a book on it. - Local, local, local , local transport is always the cheapest one and most of the time the most fun also.Taking a local bus with chickens, goats and smelly yelling baby’s on it is the fastest way to learn about the local culture. Ask locals where to find the bus station and how much they pay for a ticket if its not posted. Avoid travel agents. The downsite is that it may take a lot of time and sometimes inconvenience. - Bargain hard anywhere and anytime. Especially taxi and motorbike drivers are notorious for ripping you off. Walk off by the first sign of overpricing and most of the time the prices suddenly drop 50% or more. - Walk around; you can easily do 4 or 5 kilometers an hour, a great chance to meet people on the streets and who knows how one thing can lead to another. You will not meet girls sitting in a taxicab. - A bus is almost always cheaper than a train and a train is almost always cheaper than a airplane. Travel slow and save money. Read the stories and see how I met some girls on busses and trains. - Plan ahead. Book airplanes online and as far ahead as possible, this is a great money saver. Use budget airlines and look for the hidden costs. Strange advice from a guy who always travels by the day or few days. I spend way too much money on this. Does this all mean you can never stay in a fancy room, eat a descent and tasty meal, smash 50 Dollar on drinks? The answer is no, you are traveling to enjoy and have a good time, just keep in mind the more you spend the shorter your trip will be and the sooner you will be back at a boring job. Me eating a free 18 dollar steak sandwich in a free 5 star hotel.

Cartagena story/tips

Skip to the bottom if you just want some quick tips. This thing got way out of hand. I know there’s already a lot of info available here on Cartagena so I’m just going to add a few observations that I haven’t seen yet. Cartagena for me was a lot of fun. I’d kind of been avoiding it because I knew it was a major tourist/backpacker destination and I’m not that interested in being a ‘tourist’ normally but I found a cheap flight here on the way to Venezuela and people kept telling me it was worth a visit so I thought I’d give it a go. I was originally planning to stay for only a few days but kept on meeting interesting people at the hostel, including the son of the owners who inivited me to go out with his local friends and then a pretty local girl who I thought might be worth the extra effort (paid off) so I ended up being there for almost 3 weeks. The first thing I’ll say about Cartagena is that outside of the tourist part (maybe 10% of the city) the city is a shithole and very monotonous. Everything is covered in a beige dust like the city’s built on clay or something and there’s rubbish everywhere. I saw a lot of the city because I caught some buses to Boquilla (town on the beach to east of the city) and a barrio called El Amparo, and also when I rode a bike with some locals to playa blanca which is like 50kms away. The saving grace is CUTE GIRLS. In my experience cartagena is full of cute brown skinned girls and you’ll spot them fairly frequently even in the shitty parts. On to the important part…Getting them in the sack. I picked up twice in my time in cartagena. I had some other opportunities but they would have required a sacrifice in quality that I wasn’t willing to accept. The first time was a girl from Ibagué that was there on holiday with a gay friend and a french canadian girl who was studying spanish in Ibagué. I really didn’t have to do anything for this bang, it was purely right place, right time. I went out alone for a walk one thursday night in Getsemani, the main backpacker area, and ended up sitting down in busy plaza where the local church is to do some people watching. This spot became a favourite spot to just hang out and have a drink. There’s a lot of tourists hanging around but it’s still got a very authentic vibe with heaps of locals hanging out listening to music and talking, and heaps of little brown skinned cuties walking around (This is the kind of place that makes me love Colombia. It just doesn’t exist in Australia). Anyway this night I just sat down alone on the bench and within a few minutes noticed these guys looking at me from a distance I kind of stared and raised an eyebrow and they called me over and invited me to drink aguardiente with them. The girl was only 17 but with a big ass and tits and a pretty face (she told me black guys were hitting on her constantly and I believe her. Exactly the kind of white chick with a booty they seem to like). I wasn’t that attracted to her but she was making it so ridiculously easy I just decided to go with it. Within minutes she was telling me how much she loves guys with blue eyes and getting very touchy. Anyway to cut to the chase, the candian girl went back to the hotel early, we went to a bar (dont remember what it’s called, its downstairs from Quiebra Canto) and ended up hanging out with some dodgy rolos until the gay passed out the table and we got a taxi to drop him off at the hotel and then continued to a motel. It was actually my first time using a motel, I’d always just used my apartment in medellin before. The sex was pretty average, mainly because it hurt her a lot. She was a trooper though and whenever it looked like she was in pain and I slowed down a bit she’d tell me ‘no importa, dale dale’. The next conquest was the one I’m really proud of. I’m always more attracted to the ‘authentic’ colombianas. The one’s that don’t speak english, that have never hooked up with a foreigner. I want to be the first foreigner to defile her. Anyway this girl was a friend of the guy who works at the hostel and she came by one afternoon to buy weed from him when I was there. Afterwards I asked the guy who it was and he said she’d (supposedly) never hung out with any foreigners and called her straight away and organized for us to go hang out later that day. The first time we met was pretty boring just talking but it was notable because it was the first time in my more then 14 months in Colombia that the police blackmailed me. We went to smoke a joint behind the Castillo San Felipe de Barajas and as we were finishing up some cops on a motorbike came up. The kid from the hostel had a knife and although they didn’t find weed on us, they suspected it and told him that if we didn’t give them money they would take us to the station to drug test us all and arrest me for possesion. They even showed the huge bag of weed they already had in their bike that they were threatening to pin on me. I ended up giving them 20mil. I could have just told them to get fucked and walk away but I would have left the others in shit because of the knife the kid had. We made plans to meet up the next day but she flaked. The hardest part about getting this bang was the girls schedule. Working 8-4 and studying 6-10 monday to saturday. I liked this because it meant she was ostensibly a ‘good’ girl, therefore increasing the satisfaction of defiling her (although it occured to me that it doesn’t in any way rule out the possibility that she was a prostitute when she was 15, she’s 20 now). So anyway the next time we met was the following friday when we went out in a group with some chilean guys I met at the hostel and her and her two fat friends. I was trying to get her out alone but she was resistant and I thought fuck it at least I can use her to get me in a dancing mood and ready to hit on the other girls if it looked like it wasn’t going anywhere with her. So here’s where I’ll a take a detour to talk about Cartagena’s other night life options… From the moment I arrived I was asking around whenever I was chatting to locals about where the nightlife is in the rest of the city. Normal cartageneras do not go out in the old city unless it’s some very special occasion, or they get a foreigner to take them and pay for everything. If you only go out in the old city you meet backpackers (75% Argentinean while I was there, and by the way, those argentinean girls have got NOTHING on the locals), rich colombians from other cities (mostly Bogotá) and a lot of prostitutes. A lot of places in the old city only have prostitutes. It’s boring if it’s not what you’re looking for. The are two other main nightlife areas in Cartagena. Bocagrande, where the rich cartageneros and traquetos have their apartments and a few spots along the Avenida Pedro de Heredia until you get to ‘La Bomba del Amparo’. I only found one good spot in Bocagrande, but I only went there a couple of times and never on the weekend. The place to be in Cartagena on a Wednesday is without doubt ‘15 minutos de fama’. I only found it by accident because I went with some guys who wanted to go to a casino but got bored, but it turns out that wednsesday night is ’super amigas’ night, and the place was packed with strictly local rich kids. It was the one place I went to in Cartagena that felt like it might have been Barrio Colombia or Lleras in Medellin (the same bar exists in medellin actually). Lots of pretty girls dressed nice but in groups with a lot of guys. Still, for a wednesday night in cartagena you’re only other option is one of the backpacer bars on the Calle Media Luna so it’s definitely worth rolling the dice and checking it out I reckon. We actually went back on thursday and found the place a complete graveyard, so make sure you go on Wednesday. The other spots I went to in the ‘barrio’ were those along the avenida. I don’t have names of the individual bars, there’s just a few spots where you find some bars and nightclubs groped together. It takes about 10-15mins to get there in taxi but it’s all just straight down the avenida so you can’t get lost. The three night spots I saw were Las Gaviotas, Los Ejecutivos and across the road from La Bomba del Amparo. They’re all just a few minutes walk from each other really. So this Friday when I went out with the girl I met, her two fat friends and 5 ugly chilean guys we went first to Las Gaviotas, which we found pretty quiet so we walked down the street for 5-10 minutes past Los ejecutivos and the centro comercial la castellana until we got to a place that has green lights (that’s all I remember), saw it had people in it and went in. They were playing ‘crossover’ latin music and there were a few cute girls as well as some pretty ugly chicks. I left the chileans to deal with the fat girls and got to work dancing with m girl and feeding her alcohol, which was going pretty well except that she kept on avoiding any attempt at going for the kiss. I’m usually not very direct but tonight I decided that I was going to make my intentions obvious, I wanted to know if something was going to happen or not because if not, I was going to get the next bus to Barranquilla (aside: they say there’s absolutely nothing for tourists in barranquilla outside of the carnival but the city apparently has a banging night-life and the girls I’ve met from Barranquilla have more often than not been cuties. Is it just me or does that sound perfect for the spanish speaking worldly man…a big colombian city where a foreigner is still an unusual site)… So I grabbed the girls hand and lead her outside to give it to her straight. I told ‘I think your hot, I like you, so what’s up?’ She kept kind of moving away so I had grab her and kind of used it as an excuse to wrap her up and kiss her neck telling her that we can fight if she wants cause I’ll win (something like that anyway), she ends up telling me that she doesn’t want to hook up with a foreigner who’s just going to leave the next day, that she’s not that kind of girl and all that shit. I told her that I was staying in Colombia, that I wasn’t 100% sure if I would stay in Medellín and that I really liked Cartagena so who knows etc. All kind of true . About now the others come out and she says she has to go because she has to get up for work at 6am and it was already 2am, so we all pile in a taxi to drop her and her friends off. When she gets out, I get out with her to go for the kiss but she’s kind of in a hurry and I barely get a peck. Later she’d tell me that it was because she didn’t want us to get robbed, which might be true cause she lived way south. I left the two fattest and ugliest chileans at the house of one of the fat friends (They both fucked her. Filthy bastards!) and went back to the hostel, wondering if I should escape to Barranquilla. Nexy day it seemed like my direct approach had an effect because I awoke (at 2pm) to a message from my target saying that she liked me, really wanted to see me again, the next time would be way better bla bla bla. I was having fun and I’m a lazy traveller (can’t be bothered to pack up my mess) anyway so I decided to hang around and see what happened. It was here I hatched a plan to stay at a hotel down by the Bomba del Amparo the following Friday, Saturday, Sunday. I figures either she’d come around and it’d be or I could go out to the bars/clubs nearby and have my private room a short walk away if I had any success. I couldn’t find any info on the net so I went down during the day to look for a hotel near the action and found a couple. Funnily I only remember the name of the one I didn’t stay at, Hotel Sol de Este. The other one was Hotel ’something’ Plaza. Both cost about COP$70000 (COP$90000 for 2 people) for a room with double bed, tv, wifi, bathroom. Well worth the extra cash after sleeping in a shitty hotel bunk for nearly 3 weeks. Friday arrives and I get a message telling me that she feels sick and doesn’t think she should go out but would still like to visit me at the hotel. When she gets there we talk for a few minutes before she lies next to me on the bed and falls asleep within a minute then promptly wakes up and freaks out saying she can’t sleep cause she has to work the next day. I told her she should go home if she’s that bad but she said she didn’t want to, I took the hint… I got some mad dirty looks from the male receptionist when I took her to get a taxi around midnight and he maintain the cold demeanour for the of my time there. When she came again the next night he told me I had to pay for two people if she was in my room more than 5mins…I had a long talk to the security guard (young black guy full stories and advice for looking after myself with the cops and the rougher streets of cartagena. legend.) when she left and he pointed out that I’d missed the two brothels and a love motel across the road from the hotel I was staying at so the management is actually kind of used to gringos bringing back hookers and doesn’t like it. Anyway this is turning into an epic ramble so I’m going to do a… Summary 1. 15 Minutos de Fama in Bocagrande is the only classy club I went to in Cartagena that only had pretty young and rich cartageneras, There was a Chupitos shots bar pretty nearby that seemed to have a similar clientele but I was hardly there 5mins 2. There are two big shopping centres that I checked out a couple of times. The fanciest one is Caribe Plaza which is pretty close to the old city, but the one I spent more time in and saw the best ratio of hotties was La Castellana . Its 15-20mins on the bus from the old city straight down the Avenida. It’s big and has a lot of opportunities for daygame. A foreigner is a strange site down there because it’s so far from the tourist part. Lots of looks and curiosity. 3. The plaza by the church called ‘Parroquia de la Santísima Trinida’ in Getsemaní (main backpacker area) fills up with people, including lots of pretty local girls most nights. It’s a good spot to hang out and people watch or strike up a convo. You might get lucky..I did 4. If you’re feeling adventurous and want to meet locals check out the nightlife in Las Gaviotas, Los Ejecutivos and just before La Bomba de Amparo . They’re all more or less within 15mins walking distance along the avenida. You’ll need to be with someone who speaks reasonable spanish I think. 5. Cartagena’s nightlife outside of the tourist spots really only get going on saturdays. Friday at the places I mentioned above was pretty subdued and when I asked around every said that because so many people work saturdays fridays are always pretty quiet in comparison. I never got to prove this myself because I had a cartagenera in my hotel room doing things she swears she’s never done before… 6. For a local girl, the stigma of being seen with a foreigner is probably worse in Cartagena than any other city. Cartagena is the city where old foreigners have come to get hookers for years. This could make the job of defiling a ‘good’ girl a lot harder (but a lot more fulfiling). I can’t believe how long this has become. I’m sure I’m forgetting something that I really wanted to add but hope it helps someone out anyway. I get a lot of value from Roosh and the forum and have been meaning to give back for a long time.
